Test pattern for Lurcher / Podenco Coat

coat redyellow

I have been asked to create a coat pattern suitable for Lurchers and Podencos that are medium sized so this is what I have come up with.

This pattern has been mathematically calculated from the measurements of the greyhound and whippet coats and has not yet been made and tested on a medium sized hound. I would love some feedback and pics if you have a go at it please.

If you would like to test it out please feel free to download the pattern here

Patchwork Blanket Panel – Free Pattern

If you fancy using up your oddments of yarn, you can knit the patchwork blanket panels and sew or crochet them together to make blankets, cushions and throws.  Great for fundraising!

patchwork panel

The patchwork panel measures approx

9 inches wide by 9.5 inches long.

The ears are a bit fiddly as they are knitted out of the pattern grid and fall loosely onto the hound’s face.

There are also details of a plain piece so you can alternate the panels in your project

Love the newsletters and wonder if you have any plans to produce a collection of the doggie recipes? I have two rescue retired racing greyhounds who are very fussy eaters but love homemade liver biscuits. I just though it could be good fund raiser – I’d buy a copy anyway!!!

    Kind Regards,
    Sara

  2. Mandy says:

Thank you for the free download, I will put a donation in the Greyhound Walks collection tin next week!

  3. Helen Healy says:

Like Mandy, I thank you very much for the free knitting pattern. I’m not a very experienced knitter but I want to try to make things for the two rescue retired greyhounds my brother and his partner have. The snoods will be a good start and I have bought a couple of other patterns so I have other items to aspire too I’m glad to have found your website. Many thanks again.

  4. Jenny says:

Thank you, newsletter brilliant. Going to try the liver biscuits :-) I know what you mean by keep it up high. We have 3 rescued counter surfers in this house x

  5. Debbie Stapleton says:

I haven’t knitted for ages so will give this free download for a snood a go and if all goes well will be back for the coat.

  6. Sheryll says:

Thanks for the free pattern for the snood. Looks great,

  7. Maureen Martinek says:

Thank you so very very very much for sharing your dog snood pattern. My daugher had to put down one of her greyhounds and I wanted to make a snood for Jethro the remaining boy. They are such sweet dogs. I’m not sure why no one else will share their patterns, oh well. And kudos to you for helping to save these beautiful, misused dogs. They have such sweet personalities. Maureen

  8. Susan says:

Thank you for the snood pattern. Will be making one for my girl Ellie reaady for those cool morning walks.

  9. Christine says:

Thank you for the free snood pattern. I knit coats for a local dog rescue who take in greyhounds on a regular basis so these snoods will come in handy and the added benefit is that they are quick to make.

  10. Paula says:

Hi Val! Thanks so much for the knitting patterns! My mom has been wanting to knit my fur-child, Rebel, a sweater and this is a great pattern! And so is the stole!! That’s awesome!! I’m going to buy the wool and hope she’ll make me one too. I unfortunately did not acquire the knitting gene and am a complete clutz with needles! :)

paula [Ottawa, Canada; mom to Nitro Iceman (Rebel)]

  11. Janice says:

Thanks so much for the free pattern (as well as all the other) . I have a sewn coat that was my former hound’s, although that poor boy always disliked it so. Now my new girl, who is just a tad bit over four years old, and suffering from liver disease, is requiring cold weather gear. Unfortunately, she cannot stand that sewn coat either, but I have high hopes for both your snood and coat patterns. Thank you!

    • Val says:

Aw, bless her, hope she is able to recover from her illness it is so worrying when they have health problems. I am sure some knitteds will cheer her up and keep her cosy and warm x x x

  12. Dianne says:

Thanks for the free snood pattern. My daughter collects in our local town for greyhound rescue and I will send a donation with her the next time she goes.

  13. Sarah says:

thanks for the download. I have lots of suitable wool about the place, I think my old Alfie will be a lot warmer this winter..

  14. Jeannie says:

    Hi Val

Just downloaded the Footie snood pattern I knitted a number of the greyhound reindeer snoods The ears are great but I was unsure what to stuff the antlers with as most things made them too heavy
Also just knitting more snoods for a Christmas Fair I have made up a cable and moss stitch pattern and they do look good

I have been knitting since I was 3 (My father taught me one rainy day!) so am OK but your helpful knitting instructions will surely be a great boon for anyone learning to knit
    Keep up the good work
    Glad I found your site

    Jeannie

    • Val says:

Thanks Jeannie, glad you like the site :) I just stuff the antlers lightly with toy stuffing or the inside of a bed pillow. Some hounds dislike hats with bits that jiggle about

  15. Brian says:

Hi, I love the snoods and coats and want to make one for my Lurcher. Unfortunately he has a front leg missing and neither myself or my wife can knit. Is it easy to learning to knit and can the pattern easily be adjusted to account for the missing limb?
    Regards
    Brian & Sue

    • Val says:

Hi Brian, There are some free tutorial videos on the Knitting Page that you can watch to learn how to knit. Also the coats do not have ‘armholes’ so they fit ok if the hounds have a leg missing. There are some ready made coats available in the online shop and we have a clearance sale discount of 30% up until the end of November :) Hope that helps x x x Val

  16. Debbie says:

    Hi,
Merry Christmas to you and your family, two legged and four legged. I have a quick query for you about the greyhound coat. I have finished the coat and need to attach the belt to it. In the instructions it says how far up from the back to sew it on but on the finished ones I have seen it looks like the belt is attached not at the edge but further in. Could you tell me where you attach the belt on the coat, or if you could do a quick video to demonstrate this it would be very helpful as it doesn’t really say in the instructions, although the rest of the instructions are very clear. Thank you!

    • Val says:

Hi, The belt is attached at the middle of the coat approx 14 inches in from the cast off edge. Imagine the coat on the dog and you drape the belt across the dog’s back so that the buttons are down one side and the belt comes under the tummy to do up around the dog’s ‘waist’. You sew the belt in place where the dog’s spine is and sew a couple of inches of the belt to the coat. If you have a waterproof walking out dog coat with a velcro fastening belt, then it is attached in the same place in much the same way. Hope that helps :)

      Merry Christmas
      Val

  17. Brigid Budd says:

I have a saluki cross lurcher and am not sure whether to knit whippet or greyhound sized hats. Any suggestions. Also she is missing a front leg and I have found it hard to find any sort of coat that does not move round when she runs. Her shoulder blade is also missing so no bone structure to hold coats up. How could I adapt a coat pattern for her

    • Val says:

Not sure but I would suggest making both hats and see which fits best, you can always sell the other one on ebay :) for the coat you could probably make a chest piece in garter stitch to go underneath? She sounds like a livewire even with only 3 legs, bless her :)
